What the heck is that thing?

Don't worry about that for a second. First, let's talk about the Echo Science Conference.

What about Echo's Science Conference?
We live in a world that's consumed by science and its bastard child, high technology, much as in centuries past when the world was obsessed with religion and ceremony. People then saw the world as being run by entities beyond our ordinary comprehension. Today we see the world as a place run by people and machines whose thinking and operation are just as outside of our everyday realm.

Most of us don't understand how our refrigerators work, let alone our palm-top computers, cellular telephones, and communications satellites. We are told that it's silly to believe that a deity created the universe out of a vacuum. Instead, we're told that the universe was created in a nanosecond-long Big Bang, when six of the ten dimensions curled up somehow to create what we perceive as physical matter (including ourselves) within the four dimensions that were left. As if that's easy to swallow.

If you're interested in science and its place in modern society, join us in the Echo Science Conference. Here we're discussing the challenging issues that scientific research and discovery present us. Every new thing we learn about the universe, and everything that we create with that knowledge, presents all of us with new ethical, moral, and social challenges. From cloning to biotechnology to nuclear propulsion, we'll do our best to sort it all out. When we're done, maybe somebody can explain how "shampoo plus conditioner" works. Why doesn't the shampoo wash out the conditioner? Is it just a bad shampoo?

On Echo, a "Conference," like Science, Art. Spirituality, Culture, or Angst, is made up of "Items," which are topics of discussion. Any Conference member can start a new Item when he or she feels the need.

Current Items in the Science Conference

Of course, to know anything about Echo's Science Conference, you have to know something about Echo, which The Industry Standard called "the smartest community on the Internet." It's also one of the oldest. To find out more, and for information about joining Echo, take a look at the Echo's own Web site at www.echconyc.com.

So, What's That Thing Up There?
Yes, that is a bottle of a faddish, revolting soft drink. Yes, it's acting sort of like a Lava Lamp.

Dying to make your own Orbitz Lava Lamp? It's easy. If you want to know how, you can also watch a longer, bigger clip (185K). And if you don't like Lava Lamps, you can watch the explosive spread of zebra mussels through the Great Lakes and the Midwest.
